Identification guide
Identify your Mercedes navigation system before ordering maps.
A model badge and registration year are not enough to choose map files. Use the VIN lookup together with the information shown by the navigation system currently installed in your car.
Updated
The details to collect
- The full 17-character VIN from the vehicle records.
- A photo of the navigation map version screen, including all text and any region or part number.
- A photo of the main navigation menu, plus any displayed system name.
- Whether the car has an imported, replaced or retrofitted head unit.
1. Start with the VIN lookup
The lookup can identify the vehicle and return a supported navigation update. If an update is offered, record the navigation generation, map region and version shown. This gives you a starting point for checking the package.
A VIN result describes the vehicle information available to the service. It cannot prove that the car still has its original head unit. If the unit was changed, tell support before ordering a PIN based on the factory configuration.
2. Find the installed map version
Open the vehicle's navigation settings and look for the map version information. The menu path varies by system. Use the Mercedes-Benz owner's manual for your model and multimedia system to find the correct screen rather than following a menu sequence for a different car.
Photograph the whole screen. Keep the full version text, market name and part number visible if they are shown. A year alone is less useful than the complete label because different map families can have similar version names.
3. Compare the installed system with the lookup
| Detail | What to compare |
|---|---|
| System family | The navigation generation in the result should fit the unit installed in the car. Similar screens or a COMAND label alone do not identify the exact generation. |
| Map region | Compare the installed map market with the offered package. An imported car may still use maps from its original market. |
| Current version | Keep the complete installed version label. Compare it with the package offered, without assuming that a higher number from another family is compatible. |
| Hardware history | If a unit was replaced or retrofitted, use its existing documentation or part number alongside the VIN. Do not dismantle the dashboard just to perform this check. |
COMAND, MBUX, Becker and Garmin are different update paths
The navigation name matters, but it is only part of the match. navi-update's PIN checkout includes several NTG generations; it does not offer one universal code for every Mercedes navigation system. A Becker MAP PILOT or Garmin MAP PILOT label should prompt a separate compatibility check rather than an order for a COMAND map PIN.
For MBUX, check the result for the exact vehicle. A modern screen does not by itself establish whether a manual map PIN is available or needed. Read the compatibility overview before choosing a package.
If the information does not match
Stop before checkout if the result names a different vehicle, the navigation family is uncertain, or the region does not match the intended update. Gather the screen photos and explain any hardware changes so support can review the discrepancy.
Send your VIN, a photo of the complete map version screen and a description of the issue to contact@mbtools.com or contact us on WhatsApp. If you have already paid, include the order reference. Keep your activation PIN out of public posts.
Once the system is identified
Review the map PIN product details, then follow the map installation guide. The selected package determines the download, storage media and preparation requirements.
